Art Cycle by Shattered-Earth Art Cycle by Shattered-Earth
Edit 4/7/2015: Updated the image to make it hopefully slightly easier to understand. Still lots of info crammed into it but oh well...

Apologies for how messy this is.. I know this is uploaded at night but i scribbled it in the morning.. really early in the morning >_>

I'm trying to find the original graph for this, it was from a personal art blog of someone doing portraits and other traditional art. Their graph was cleaner (well it was like pixel/ms paint?) And every since I saw it i've kept it in mind. Now when I want to EXPLAIN it to other people without the graph it self it's just confusing so i made my own till i can find the other one.

If you know what i'm talking about please let me know so i can credit them!

This is pretty reassuring. Thank you for sharing this advice along with us! It makes me feel a bit better about the times where i hate my art haha. It is funny though how sometimes I can be like 'yeah this looks great!' then a week later or so think 'this is rubbish, how could I possibly think this was good'

This is actually really perf. There were always periods in my development where I believed I was at the top of my game, then realized I wasn't and got discouraged/went into hiatus, then started the cycle all over again. Nice!

Yea, this should help people not hiatus so much, and instead working through it to get better even faster!

LOL that's a funny way to put it! When your ability to see is too low you're getting the incompetant side and vice versa for when you're ability to see is high i suppose :)

this totally explains art blocks! i've realized years ago that after an art block, i ALWAYS seem to have magically gained some sirius skill/improved a lot! my theory was that my brain was loading new knowledge somehow :iconyaomingmemeplz: but this makes a lot of sense because whenever i'm in an artblock, i look at art a lot and really study it, and start to grasp more of what's going on in the pieces.

mind blown! thank you for uploading this! <3

I spent most of this year being depressed and thinking that my art totally sucks. This has really helped me understand what I'm going through. Now I know not to give up. Thank you!

This actually doesn't make me feel better. On the contary.

Now whenever I think my art is not terrible I'll know it IS, I just can't see it because my ability to see is even worse XD

LOL, it's not terrible, it just *IS*, and it's good that we don't get too cocky and stagnate XD But you should always be proud of your art no matter what :D

I feel like I definitely knew this was why I would go through bouts of "I'm running out of time, I'm not good enough" etc, but seeing it this way definitely helps put it in perspective, haha. Thank you for this~!

This happens more frequently when you are still a beginner artist. I've been drawing cubes for DAYS and I'm starting to get frustrated with myself.

Anywho , I really love this and really need to print this out and put it around the house. Thanks for making it. x3

This makes me feel both better and worse about when this happens. LOL. (Actually, my problem right now is just finishing art. Stupid health issues making it hard to do anything, gah.)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, 'knowing is half the battle' and all that happy horseshit, but it still makes me kinda sadfase. :(

I think it's just because there's really nothing you can do about it. I DO like knowing, mind you, that's why I said it made me feel both worse and better. XD I DO appreciate you posting this, though! I didn't want to give you the wrong impression. I was being half-silly. It's sometimes hard to read inflection online. My apologies if that didn't come out quite right. :O_o:

It's helpful knowing the WHY. I just wish there was something that could be done about it, ya know?

Oh i got the half silliness :3. And i think you should think of it another way, there's nothing to be done because you're already doing something, that is improving your seeing, without the cycle you'd just never get better because you can't improve drawing without improving seeing, it's still doing something and it's very important :O

I think this is really great, and even if you aren't the creator of the idea thanks for spreading it to us! I saw this a while ago, and since then every time i think that my drawing is TERRIBLE, I can remember that it's just me being able to critique it better. so thanks :D
